Gyms and health clubs often feature upscale décor, rows of gleaming workout machines and extensive locker room facilities. You'll also commonly see additional spaces such as specially-floored aerobics and Pilates rooms. These hefty expenditures often translate into high membership fees and multi-year contracts. If you're more budget conscious, but still want a good workout, you can find some inexpensive gym alternatives. Some lower-priced facilities include minimal amenities, while other nicely equipped gyms offer innovative partnerships.

Step 1

Research insurance company partnerships. Insurance companies benefit from healthier members who require less health care dollars. Some insurance companies offer discounts on health club and gym memberships to encourage you to join. For example, the New York Daily News noted in February 2010 that Blue Cross Blue Shield offered membership discounts up to 60 percent through its Care First Plan.

Step 2

Research employer health programs. Health-conscious companies use varied tactics to encourage their employees to stay healthy. Firms frequently offer reduced-fee memberships to local health clubs and gyms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that companies evaluate and improve current employee obesity control programs to include more physical activity options. Search your company's benefits manual, or contact your Human Resources Department, to see if your company partners with local health clubs.

Step 3

Investigate collegiate exercise facilities. Visit the athletic department of a nearby college or university, and ask about community use of the college's workout room. If that's an option, you'll likely see reasonable fees but may be limited in your access times.

Step 4

Contact college alumni associations. College alumni associations commonly offer group benefits to their graduate members. If you're in the same city, your benefits can include discounts for the college's gym facilities. Lifestyler reports that these discounts can be substantial. You may also enjoy reduced fees at national chain gyms with branches in your city. Contact your alumni association about available gym discounts.

Step 5

Locate no-frills workout facilities. Look for gyms located in less-visible locations, such as a facility in an industrial park with functional furnishings and lower rates. Search for gyms that feature basic workout equipment but no showers, lounges or television. If you're a woman, locate a one-room women's circuit training facility that provides a quick workout for a small monthly fee.
