Coarse hair, curly hair, over-processed hair, permed hair and color-treated hair often have one thing in common--frizz. Frizz can make your hair look dull and untamed. Excessive amounts of heat and humidity are enemies to anyone that has a problem with frizz, requiring preventative methods to control the problem. The right cleansing, conditioning and styling products, in combination with proper drying techniques can help lock in your hair's natural oils and keep your hair from getting frizzy.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair with a moisturizing shampoo that contains humectants. Humectants draw moisture to your hair and scalp, keeping it hydrated and controlling frizz. Follow each shampoo with a moisturizing conditioner.

Step 2

Remove excess water from your hair using an absorbent bath towel. Pat your hair, removing as much water as you can. Avoid rubbing your hair with the towel. Rubbing will create friction and increase the likelihood that your hair will frizz.

Step 3

Apply an anti-frizz serum or pomade to your damp hair. Anti-frizz serums and pomades contain oils that smooth your hair ends without weighing them down. Usually a dime-sized amount, applied to your hair using your fingertips is all you need.

Step 4

Air-dry your hair whenever possible instead of using a blow dryer. Blow-drying strips your scalp and hair of moisture. If you must blow-dry your hair, attach a diffuser to your blow dryer and set the heat to low. A diffuser will help disperse the heat, reducing damage and frizz.

Step 5

Trim your hair every six weeks. Cutting away dry ends will keep your hair looking fresh and reduce frizz. A deep conditioning treatment during your visit with your hairdresser will also help lock in moisture and keep your hair smooth and frizz-free.

Tips and Warnings

  • Performing a deep conditioning treatment at home can save you money. Deep conditioners are available in supermarkets and pharmacies. Simply apply the deep conditioner to your hair when it is dry. Allow the deep conditioner to sit on your hair for approximately 30 minutes, rinse and style as usual.
  • Do not brush your hair while it is wet. Pulling on wet hair with a brush not only promotes frizzing, it also damages your ends. If you must detangle your hair while wet, use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Avoid washing your hair every day, which can dry out your scalp and hair. Washing your hair every other day, or better yet, every two to three days will help keep your hair and scalp moisturized, reducing frizz.
