How to Tie Wrist Wraps

In any martial art that requires striking with the hands, wrist wraps serve as an essential piece of equipment. Wrist wraps consist of a strip of cloth wrapped around the wrists, knuckles and palms to bolster the hands and wrists, and prevent dislocation of bones and ligaments and bruising of the knuckles. Wrist wraps allow fighters to strike harder without the fear of personal injury.

Step 1

Insert your thumb through the loop at the beginning of the wrist wrap. Spread your hand apart and lay the hand wrap over the back of your hand.

Step 2

Wrap the wrist wrap tightly around your wrist twice, or three times if you have slimmer wrists. Avoid wrapping too tightly, which may cut off your circulation.

Step 3

Bring the wrap from the front of the palm to the area between the index finger and thumb.

Step 4

Hold the wrap in place and increase wrist support by wrapping the hand wrap around the wrist once or twice.

Step 5

Wrap the wrist wrap between the thumb and index finger twice more to protect the thumb from dislocation in hard striking.

Step 6

Hold the thumb wraps in place by wrapping around the wrist twice more.

Step 7

Wrap the wrist wrap across your knuckles three times to protect your knuckles from bruising. Wrap again around the wrist.

Step 8

Make loops between from the base of the thumb and between the index and middle finger, between the middle and ring finger and between the ring and pinky finger to prevent knuckle dislocation.

Step 9

Wrap twice more across the knuckles.

Step 10

Wrap the remainder around the wrist. Secure the end with hook-and-loop fastener or strong tape.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply consistent pressure throughout the wrapping process. If your wrap becomes too tight or loose, it will not be effective. It is best to start over.
