Symptoms of dandruff include itching and flaking, and it can be a very embarrassing ailment. There are many shampoos available on the market, in addition to shampoos that can be prescribed by your doctor or dermatologist, to control dandruff. Furthermore, there are many supplements that can alleviate the irritation and discomfort associated with dandruff.

Vitamin B

The website Hair Boutique urges you to include plenty of vitamin B into your diet to combat dandruff. vitamin B can be taken in capsule form or in certain foods. Foods that are excellent sources of vitamin B include nutritional yeast, raw wheat germ, eggs and cabbage. In capsule form, it is recommended you ingest two 50 milligram pills daily with meals.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil derives from the leaves of an Australian plant called Melaleuca alternifolia. You can crush the leaves on the plant and apply them to the scalp. Conversely, you can purchase tea tree oil as an over-the-counter ointment and apply it topically or add the substance as a complement to shampoo.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is a flowering plant found in many locations throughout the world. To use aloe as a treatment for dandruff, either massage the content inside a leaf of the plant onto your scalp or purchase an aloe ointment and rub the gel onto the problem area of your head.

Sulfur and Onions

An onion is a vegetable that possesses a high concentration of the sulfur compound. Hair Boutique recommends cutting a fresh onion in half and caressing the vegetable onto your scalp. If you don't want to use an actual onion, wash your hair weekly with a soap that contains sulfur.

Garlic

The website Hair Dressing notes garlic has been historically renowned as a potent antiseptic, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-fungal and tonic. Hair Dressing suggests using garlic as a supplement to battle dandruff. Garlic has proven effective against dandruff when used as a lotion to rub onto the scalp. If you don't want to use the vegetable itself to alleviate symptoms of dandruff, buy a lotion that has garlic as an ingredient.
