The pubococcygeus, or PC, muscle is found in both men and women. It is responsible for supporting the bladder and rectum in men, and the urethra, vagina and rectum in women. A strong PC muscle can prevent incontinence and aid in childbirth. Both men and women are benefited sexually by strengthening this muscle, notes the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Step 1
Sit down on the toilet and begin a stream of urine, notes California State University. It can be easier for men to find the muscle if they are sitting, rather than standing, during urination.
Step 2
Stop the urine midstream, without moving or squeezing your legs. The muscle that stops the urine is the PC muscle.
Step 3
Start the stream of urine and try to stop it again. Each of these start-stop contractions occurs from flexing and releasing the PC muscle. Repeat as many times as necessary to become more confident of the physical sensation of the PC muscle in action.
Tips and Warnings
- Once you have located your PC muscle, you can practice Kegel exercises by squeezing and relaxing the muscle.
