Lovenox is a form of heparin that also goes by the name enoxaparin. This medication is used to prevent or treat blood clots. It is given by injection, works quickly and wears off after a short period of time. This medication can result in certain very serious side effects, however.
Bleeding
One of the main side effects of using Lovenox is an increased risk of bleeding or bruising, Drugs.com explains. This is because Lovenox works as an anticoagulant, which means that it makes it harder for the blood to clot. Although this reduces the risk of the body developing dangerous clots which can clog blood vessels, it also means that any sort of injury can result in more extensive bleeding or bruising. Patients who have had surgery may experience increased bleeding from their surgical wound. Patients may also experience frequent nosebleeds or have bruises that appear to form spontaneously. Bruising at the injection site is also common. Patients who have received Lovenox should be especially watchful for signs of internal bleeding, which can manifest as blood appearing in the urine. Bleeding can also occur in the gastrointestinal system, resulting in bright red or black tarry stools. Patients may also have vomit that looks like coffee grounds, which is also caused by internal bleeding.
Gastrointestinal
Lovenox can also disrupt the gastrointestinal system, Drug Watch explains. This can lead to nausea and vomiting.
Neurological
Patients taking Lovenox may also develop neurological side effects. These can include confusion and dizziness. Other signs of neurological problems caused by Lovenox include tingling, numbness and a fever, Drug Watch notes.
Allergic
Some patients may be allergic to Lovenox. Mild allergies can cause an itchy rash or hives to develop, which can be uncomfortable. More severe reactions result in swelling of the face, fingers, lips and tongue. In the most extreme cases, which are known as anaphylaxis, Lovenox can cause swelling to occur in the throat, which can make swallowing difficult and which can also close the airways. This can result in trouble breathing and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Allergic reactions to Lovenox, according to Drugs.com, require medical attention because of the risk of anaphylaxis.
Thrombocytopenia
Some patients can develop a condition known as thrombocytopenia as a result of receiving Lovenox, RxList explains. Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the platelets in the body are destroyed. Because platelets are necessary for blood clotting, patients with thrombocytopenia may be unable to form blood clots. This is extremely dangerous because it can lead to massive bleeding that may be difficult to stop.
