Migraines consist of four phases; however, Excedrin Migraine only treats the pain associated with the headache phase of the migraine. Any new symptoms should be discussed with a doctor immediately. Excedrin migraine contains three ingredients: acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. You should be aware of the side effects associated with each individual ingredient.

Acetaminophen Side Effects

Acetaminophen is commonly used as a pain reliever and reduces fever. The Mayo Clinic indicates abdominal pain as a common side effect, which includes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, cramps and abdominal swelling. There are many possible rare side effects that require immediate medical condition. Irregular bleeding or bruising that may include bloody stool or urine may occur. Skin irregularities may also occur, such as a rash, hives, itching, ulcers and red or white spots. Finally, fatigue and low urine production can also be caused by acetaminophen. Overdose can produce similar stomach swelling, pain, nausea, vomiting, increased sweating, decreased appetite and diarrhea.

Aspirin Side Effects

Aspirin should never be given to anyone under the age of 18 outside of a physicians care, since it may cause a serious condition called Reye's syndrome. The Mayo Clinic describes Reye's syndrome as a quick swelling of the liver and brain that can lead to organ failure and death. The National Institute of Health indicates aspirin aids blood flow by reducing blood vessel swelling and lowering the probability of blood clots. Common side effects are similar to acetaminophen with the most prevalent including abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Aspirin use may also cause heartburn. Rare side effects include hives and rashes, unusual water retention causing swelling of extremities, irregular heartbeat, lung trouble including fast or slow breathing or wheezing, loss of hearing and black or bloody vomit or stools. All rare side effects should be evaluated by a medical professional immediately.

Caffeine Side Effects

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and works in conjunction with acetaminophen and aspirin to better alleviate migraine pain. The biggest problem for migraine sufferers is the possibility of rebound migraines. Excessive caffeine use as well as withdraw can actually induce more severe migraines, thus you should control the level of caffeine in your diet while taking Excedrin Migraine. The National Institute of Health also indicates that abdominal pains, vomiting and nausea are possible with excessive caffeine. Common problems of restlessness, anxiety, tremors and difficulty sleeping are usually light; however, if you experience a fast, uncontrolled heart rate, you should consult a physician.
