Depression Information for Kids

Talking to children about depression, especially if a parent suspects that his child may be suffering from the condition, can be painful and difficult. By providing well-rounded information in a non-pressuring approach, parents can open the line of communication with their children.

What is Depression?

Depression is a mental condition diagnosed as an overwhelming presence of sadness that does not go away with time. Depression does not have one specific cause, states the National Institutes of Mental Health. Life events, trauma, genetics and abnormal levels of neurotransmitters can all play a role in this condition.

Symptoms

According to Helpguide.org, symptoms of depression include sadness, feeling of hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, sleeping problems, appetite changes, fatigue, thoughts of suicide and other unexplained behavior.

Treatment

Treatment for depression varies, depending on the current level of the condition. Psychotherapy and medication are common treatments for the majority of sufferers, says MayoClinic.com. If depression is extreme, psychiatric hospitalization and electroconvulsive therapy may be required.
