Swelling beneath the eyes is more frequent as you age, because the tissues around your eyes become weaker. Lack of sleep or sleeping in the wrong position can make eye puffiness worse--so it's important to get enough sleep and to sleep with your head lightly elevated on a pillow so that fluid can drain away from the eyes. But, if you wake on the day of an important meeting or event with puffy eyes, try these home remedies to reduce the swelling quickly.

Cold Compress

Step 1

Fill two small plastic bags with ice cubes.

Step 2

Wrap the plastic bags in small hand towels and place them on the eyes.

Step 3

Rest in a reclined position for at least 15 minutes or until swelling is reduced.

Cucumber Eye Press

Step 1

Cut two slices of cucumber that has been chilled in the refrigerator.

Step 2

Lie down in a reclined position and place the cucumber slices on your eyes.

Step 3

Rest for 15 to 30 minutes and remove the compresses.

Witch Hazel Eye Press

Step 1

Soak two large cotton balls or pads in witch hazel.

Step 2

Lie down and place the cotton balls or pads over each eye.

Step 3

Rest for 15 minutes, allowing the witch hazel to soak in.

Step 4

Remove cotton balls and rinse your eyes with cool water.
