Breastfeeding is the most natural and nutritious way to feed your baby. Breast milk contains the perfect ratio of nutrients for a baby to grow and develop normally. Sometimes, if a baby has difficulty latching, or the mother's nipples become cracked and sore, a nipple shield may be used as a temporary fix. A nipple shield is a synthetic nipple made of silicone that is placed over the mother's nipple, according to Breastfeed.com. A nipple shield is easy to use if you follow a few simple instructions.

Step 1

Wash your hands well with soap and water before you attempt to feed the baby.

Step 2

Place a moist, warm cloth over your breast for several minutes. Remove the cloth and massage the breast for a moment or two to try and help milk flow, according to the Hamilton Regional Lactation Committee.

Step 3

Wet the back of the nipple shield with water or breast milk to help keep it in place on your breast. Fold the nipple shield so it is half way inside out and resembles a Mexican sombrero.

Step 4

Place the moistened back of the nipple shield over your areola. Ensure that your nipple is inside the shield.

Step 5

Bring your baby to your breast in a position recommended by your nurse or lactation consultant. Stroke his lips with the tip of the shield, and when he opens his mouth, latch him firmly onto the brim of the nipple shield, not just the tip.

Step 6

Squeeze your breast gently if not enough milk is getting into the shield. Be patient and keep trying, as she may not get it right on the first try.

Step 7

Wash your nipple shield with hot soapy water and pat it dry, when the baby is finished eating. Boil it for two minutes, once per day if you are using the nipple shield at home.

Tips and Warnings

  • You should use a nipple shield only as a temporary solution to your problem, and regular breastfeeding should start or continue as soon as possible.
