The aloe vera plant has been used medicinally for centuries to treat skin-related conditions such as wounds and burns and contains substances that may have anti-inflammatory effects. Aloe gel comes from the innermost part of the plant and is an ingredient in cosmetics skin creams, sunblocks and shampoos. Aloe vera gel may help slow hair loss, condition hair and fight dandruff. However additional scientific evidence is necessary to confirm the benefits of aloe vera on the hair, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Helps Fight Hair Loss

Aloe vera gel may constitute an effective herbal remedy for alopecia, or hair loss. Aloe Vera contains aloenin, a powerful stimulant which can accelerate the rate of hair growth without causing scalp irritation, according to the Hair Information website. To treat hair loss, combine 1 cup aloe vera gel, 4 tbsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp. nettle tincture and 1 tsp. each of rosemary oil and vitamin E oil, suggests the website MotherNature.com. Rub the hair treatment into your scalp daily before shampooing.

Cleanses and Conditions

Aloe Vera is a key ingredient in a number of shampoos and conditioners--and for good reason. Aloe vera gel may promote hair health simply because it is free of petroleum-based ingredients and alcohol that are contained in some hair care products. Aloe vera gel can boost blood circulation to hair follicles, which encourages thicker, fuller and healthier looking hair. You can add a little aloe gel to your regular shampoo and wash your hair as usual.

Relieves Dandruff

Intelihealth reports that aloe vera gel may successfully treat dandruff, a symptom of a common skin disorder called seborrheic dermatitis, which may also cause itchy, scaling and red skin. A review of aloe vera in dermatology published in February 2009 in the journal Giornale Italiano Di Dermatologia E Venereologia confirmed that aloe vera can effectively treat seborrheic dermatitis. Massage aloe gel into the scalp and allow it to penetrate the scalp overnight to help control dandruff; shampoo the following morning.
