Warm Up Basketball Drills

Your players will do better in a strenuous practice or game after basic warm-up drills. Warm-up drills should loosen the players' muscles, elevate their heart rates and provide opportunities to practice basic skills. Combine conditioning warm-up drills with warm-ups that emphasize a variety of skills.

Warm-Up Runs

Instruct your players to jog around the outside boundaries of the court several times. Then have players run down the court and back while performing several different warm-up exercises. The first time players run to the end of the court and back, they should lift their knees up to their chest with each step. On the second lap, have players run down the court and back while kicking their feet toward their butt with each step. On the third lap, have players shuffle across the court and back in the defensive slide position. Then have players skip to the end of the court and back for the final lap.

Loose Ball Recovery

Divide the team into two groups and have the groups line up at either end of the court. Have your assistant stand on the opposite side of the court from you. Roll a ball across the court for the first player in the line to sprint after and recover. Players must try to reach the ball before it goes out of bounds. Players who successfully recover the ball can attempt a lay-up.

Shoot, Rebound and Pass

Set up two lines of players behind the three-point line and to either side of the key. Give the ball to the first player in line in the right line. That player dribbles toward the basket to make a lay-up while the first player in the left line runs toward the basket to get the rebound. The player who gets the rebound then passes to the next player in the right line, and runs to the back of the right line. The player who shot the ball runs to the back of the left line. Continue in this manner until every player has shot several right-handed lay-ups, and then run the drill in the opposite direction for left-handed lay-ups. You can also run this drill for jump shots or three-point shots.
