How to Kayak Safely

Kayaking the open waters can be as thrilling or relaxing as you want. Whether you are in to riding the surf or finding some coastal calms to explore, kayaking is great exercise and an incredible means of escape from the daily grind. Since kayaking is relatively easy to pick up, beginning and novice kayakers can often get themselves in situations that can be dangerous if they are unprepared. However, there are ways that you can enjoy the sport of kayaking, staying safe at all times.

Step 1

Make sure that you have the essential equipment. There are certain things that are obvious if you are going to kayak with safety in mind. One is a sturdy craft. If your kayak leaks, that needs to be taken care of right away. The same goes for the paddle. It should be in good working condition with cracks. A life preserver is a necessity in case you find yourself out of the kayak. You might want to wear a helmet as well. You may never need it but, it does not hurt to protect the most precious organ in your body.

Step 2

Bring something to bail the boat. Some kayaks have built-in electric pumps that will get water out of your kayak. Having a built-in pump is not necessary. You can buy a hand pump at any reputable outdoor gear store which may require a little effort but does not require that you get out of the kayak or even remove the skirt. The least expensive option and the least practical as well, is a bucket. It will work but you'll need to pull off the skirt and possible even get out.

Step 3

Pack some dry clothes. A spare change of clothes in a waterproof bag will help dry you out if you get wet and cold. This is more important if the water or outside temperature is cold.

Step 4

Bring a basic first aid kit. Having first aid is necessary as you never know what might happen and it is good to be prepared in case of emergency.

Step 5

Bring a repair kit. It is not always easy to find the time to kayak. When you do, you don't want anything to get in the way. Potentially insignificant issues with your kayak and/or paddle can become big problems in certain situations. Having the necessary tools to fix the problem will help keep you on the water.

Step 6

Paddle with a group. It does not matter if your an expert or a beginner, it is always a good idea to go with others when you hit the water. Having friends at your side will help to keep you aware of potential hazards. They will also be there to help out if you encounter a dangerous situation or equipment malfunction.
