Apple cider vinegar and baking soda are two natural and accessible products that have many uses for both health and the home. Some of the most common ways these two substances are used in conjunction is for internal health, helping with both digestion and acid reflux. The two can also be used as household cleaners, and to cleanse the hair instead of shampoo and conditioner. Both are relatively cheap, and can be found in most stores.

Improve Digestion

Apple cider vinegar, or ACV, has been used as a home remedy for many years to improve digestion. According to Diagnose-Me.com, drinking this type of vinegar in water stimulates the release of hydrochloric acid, the acid that breaks down food in the stomach. Without enough hydrochloric acid, larger pieces of food may pass through the stomach and into the colon, irritating the sensitive walls of the colon.

The acidity of ACV can cause damage to the enamel of the teeth, so baking soda should be added to the beverage to help lower acidity.

Household Cleaner

ACV and baking soda are also natural cleansers that can take the place of harsh commercial cleaning products. A mix of the two along with water can be used to clean countertops, tubs, sinks, and even to clear out clogged drains. The Vinegar Institute notes a mix of ammonia, ACV, and baking soda with warm water can even be used to clean woodwork, painted walls and Venetian blinds.

Hair Cleanser

There is a contingent of people calling for cutting out shampoo and conditioner and naturally cleaning the hair with baking soda and ACV. Many hair products contain harmful chemicals such as methylisothiazoline, known to cause nerve damage, and diethanolamine, a potential carcinogen, according to an article on Natural Family Online. Baking soda is used to cleanse the scalp and remove excess oils, while ACV is conditioning to the hair.

It often takes weeks for the scalp to balance out from years of shampoo use that strips hair, so it is recommended to stay with the regimen for some time before determining if it is working properly.
