What Is Uprima?

According to the All Saints Clinic in the UK, impotence, or erectile dysfunction is described as the inability to sustain an erection adequate for sexual intercourse. This condition is fairly common and affects millions of men around the world. It can be caused by a number of factors, including blood flow in the area, depression, hypertension, hormonal abnormalities, vascular disease and various other causes. Treatments include constriction devices, penile injection therapy, surgery, psychological counseling and oral medications such as Uprima.

How Uprima Works

According to the Mayo Clinic, erectile dysfunction was formerly considered a psychological issue or an age-related consequence. Physical problems, however, are now thought to be the cause of this condition. Uprima claims to correct the condition by helping men achieve an erection. The drug is described as a central initiator and works by stimulating an erection through mechanisms that originate in the brain.

Pill Form

Uprima is available in a flavored pill that can be dissolved on the tongue for fast action. According to the Uprima website, the pill is a sublingual medication (it is taken under the tongue) and may be more effective than popular alternative drugs that need to be taken with food and digested. Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are other recognized drugs that have been widely used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, these drugs differ. They work by relaxing the penis muscles and increasing blood flow, while Uprima stimulates the brain.

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in Uprima is apomorphine, a drug that has also been used to treat other medical conditions. This active ingredient is also said to have been used to treat Parkinson's disease.

Common Side Effects

According to the All Saints Clinic, common side effects of uprima include nausea, headaches and dizziness.
