Nasonex is a medication in a class of drugs known as steroids. According to Drugs.com, Nasonex is used to treat and prevent nasal symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, and runny nose caused by seasonal or year-round allergies and to treat nasal polyps. It works by decreasing inflammation. It may take a few weeks to begin feeling better when taking Nasonex. There are some side effects associated with Nasonex nasal spray.
Headache and Joint Pain
Nasonex may cause headache and joint pain in some users. These side effects may be temporary and lessen over time as the body adjusts to Nasonex. If headache and joint pain become bothersome, a physician should be consulted regarding the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the relief of symptoms. If headache persists or worsens, or is accompanied by problems with vision, it may be a sign of a serious side effect and should be reported to a health-care provider immediately.
Cold Symptoms
Some patients may develop cold symptoms while taking Nasonex. Symptoms can include stuffy nose, sore throat and cough, says Drugs.com. Using a humidifier and throat lozenges may help to alleviate these effects. If these side effects occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph nodes, or yellow or green tinged mucous it may be a sign of a bacterial infection which requires medical treatment.
Nausea
Nausea may occur while taking Nasonex. This side effect may diminish over time as the body adjusts to this medication. Eating a bland diet and having smaller meals more frequently may help to decrease nausea. If persistent vomiting occurs a physician should be notified. Left untreated, vomiting can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which may be dangerous.
Nosebleed
Some patients may develop a nosebleed while using Nasonex nasal spray. This may be caused from additional inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Patients should gently pinch the nose and tilt the head forward until bleeding subsides. A mild saline nasal wash may be used to cleanse the channels of the nose, or nares. According to Drugs.com, a patient should consult their doctor at once if they experience a severe or ongoing nose bleed.
