Prilosec, also known by the generic name omeprazole, belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. Proton pump inhibitors are drugs used to decrease the production of stomach acid in order to allow various stomach and esophagus disorders to heal. Prilosec is used to treat and prevent various gastrointestinal conditions.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
According to Drugs.com, Prilosec is used to decrease production of stomach acid and allows the esophagus to heal damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney diseases website states that, GERD is a serious form of heartburn. GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter opens spontaneously and allows backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus. The stomach acid damages the lining of the esophagus.
Ulcers
According to FamilyDoctor.org, ulcers are sores in the lining of the stomach and duodenum caused by bacteria infection and the overproduction of stomach acid. Use of certain drugs such as non-steroidal non-inflammatory drugs may also cause stomach ulcers. Prilosec is used to suppress stomach acid in order to allow ulcers to heal.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
Drugs.com states that Prilosec is used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. According to MayoClinic.com, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a condtion caused by tumors in the pancreas and lymph nodes. These tumors secrete large amounts of the hormone gastrin, which causes over production of stomach acid. Prilosec decreases overproduction of stomach acid in patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
