Aloe vera is a tropical plant that's been used medicinally throughout the world for thousands of years. The clear gel taken from the pulp of the aloe vera leaves is applied to the skin to relieve burns, promote wound healing, and treat infections and conditions such as psoriasis. Topical aloe gel is generally regarded as safe, however it should not be used on very deep or open skin wounds, advises the University of Maryland Medical Center or UMMC. The FDA has not evaluated the usefulness or safety of topical aloe vera.
Relieves Dryness
Aloe vera is contained in some skin moisturizers due to its apparent ability to relieve dryness.
A study published in November 2006 in the journal "Skin Research and Technology" found that freeze-dried aloe vera extract appears to be a natural humectant that helps improve skin hydration. The study was lead by S.E. Dal'Belo, of the Laboratory of Cosmetic Technology, Faculdade de Ciencias Farmaceuticas de Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Brazil.
Promotes Skin Healing
Aloe vera may expedite the healing of minor skin burns, according to MedlinePlus. Aloe vera gel is a universal household remedy to soothe burns, sunburns and cuts as it contains compounds that may relieve inflammation and pain. Aloe vera may also encourage skin regrowth.
Eczema and Psoriasis Remedy
Aloe vera gel may diminish symptoms of common skin conditions like psoriasis, notes the UMMC. Classic symptoms of psoriasis include inflamed red patches with a silvery scaling.
A randomized, comparative, double-blind, eight-week study published in February 2010 in the "Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology" found that aloe vera cream was more effective than the steroid cream triamcinolone acetonide in decreasing symptoms of psoriasis. The research was lead by C. Choonhakarn of the Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, Srinagarind Hospital Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen.
Aloe vera may also help treat the common skin condition eczema. Symptoms of eczema include itchy and scaly rashes that may blister, peel or emit fluid.
Helps Heal Skin Ulcers
Aloe vera may promote the healing of skin ulcers, but further studies are needed, according to MedlinePlus. Skin ulcers are open sores that may cause a shedding of inflamed tissue. Trauma, poor blood circulation and exposure to extreme temperatures may all cause skin ulcers.
