A man can be jealous of his partner's friends, especially former boyfriends, as well as a co-worker's paycheck, a neighbor's new car or any number of people and things. But it is in a relationship where jealousy can often have the biggest effect on others, especially if it is accompanied by violence or other dangerous behavior. And because of that, it's important to recognize some key signs of jealousy.
Cutting Off Friends and Family
If a man thinks that his wife or girlfriend's family, co-workers or friends are a threat to the relationship, he may take steps to cut his mate off from those people, according to a July 1, 2009 article in "Psychology Today." A man who discourages you from spending time with friends or family, and interrogates you about where you have been and who you have spent time with, is displaying classic signs of jealousy.
Mate-Retention Techniques
That "Psychology Today" article also notes that men may reveal their jealous sides by behaviors that appear to be benign and even romantic. For example, a man who sends a girlfriend flowers and gifts frequently and then asks many questions about what she and others thought of the presents, is displaying his insecurities about the relationship and is jealous of anyone else who might pay attention to his girl.
Imagining Infidelity
A man who is extremely jealous can actually convince himself that a partner is cheating on him even when there is no evidence to support such an idea. An article in the January-February 2004 issue of "American Scientist" refers to this as "morbid jealousy," and its signs can include accusations, spying and even violence. If a guy appears consumed by the idea that you're cheating, even when there is no evidence or suggestion of the fact, he is expressing a form of jealousy that can often end in violence, and you may be best served by terminating the relationship or at least seeking counseling.
