Dark shadows under your eyes can make you look fatigued. According to the New York Times, causes of dark under eye circles include heredity, fatigue, alcohol consumption, aging and allergies. The dark shadows appear when the blood vessels beneath the skin widen and darken. If you are unable to get rid of dark shadows beneath the eyes at home, you can speak to a doctor about more aggressive treatments available, such as laser surgery and injectable fillers.
Step 1
Sleep for seven hours or more each night. Fatigue dulls the skin and can give you shadows around the eyes.
Step 2
Mix the sea salt and warm water in a clean, empty cup. Fill up a bulb syringe with the mixture.
Step 3
Tilt your head to one side. Put the bulb syringe at the base of the nostril that is pointed toward the ceiling.
Step 4
Rinse out the sinuses with the saltwater solution. Empty the contents of the bulb syringe into the nostril. Allow for the solution to run out of the nose. Since it may get messy, you may want to do this step over a sink. Repeat the process for the other side. According to the Mayo Clinic, rinsing the sinuses removes nasal congestion that may be causing the dark circles under your eyes.
Step 5
Apply an under eye cream. The New York Times recommends creams that contain a plumping agent, such as vitamin C and vitamin K. These ingredients inflame the under eye area to get rid of dark shadows.
Tips and Warnings
- In the meantime, camouflage under eye shadows with concealers. Choose a color that is a shade lighter than your natural skin color and dab a small amount to cover the circles.
- Avoid alcohol if you are trying to get rid of dark circles. Because alcohol is dehydrating, it thins out the skin and worsens the appearance of dark shadows.
