A ski skin suit is tight-fitting gear used frequently for racing and usually constructed of a light fabric, such as Lycra. The theory behind these suits is that reduced air resistance allows a skier to move faster. Skiing can be a sport that exposes clothing to various environmental elements that add grime and debris. In addition, your body produces perspiration that settles in the fabric, wearing it down. Washing delicate fabrics takes care, but cleaning your ski suit correctly will increase the performance and life span of the product.

Step 1

Fill the washing machine with cold water. Add a detergent for gentle fabrics. Some choices include sports wash or detergents for fine lingerie and baby clothes. The detergent should not contain a brightening solution or bleaching compound.

Step 2

Run the suit through the gentle cycle on the washer or hand wash. If hand washing, submerge the suit in the cold water. Dip it in and out of the water several times. Rub the fabric together in key areas, such as armpits and groin, to help remove surface debris and embedded dirt. Continue dipping the fabric in the water for three to five minutes.

Step 3

Drain the water in the washer if hand washing. Refill the tank with cold water. Repeat the steps for washing, without adding detergent to the water, to rinse out residue from the detergent. Gently squeeze excess water out of the suit.

Step 4

Hang the suit on a plastic hanger and allow to air-dry. As an alternative, lay it flat on a hard surface or place the suit on an outdoor clothesline.
