Hypoglycemic Diet Tips

Blood sugar is a substance that the body uses for energy. It is obtained from the consumption of carbohydrates. Hypoglycemia is a condition where the blood sugar levels in the body become abnormally low. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include disorientation, blurred vision, sweating, anxiety and heart palpitations. One treatment option for it is a specific diet, and there are several tips to follow.

Recognition

When you have hypoglycemia, several foods can trigger symptoms. Pay close attention to everything you eat and how your body reacts to it. Go as far as keeping a journal to track everything.

Snacks

Always carry around some kind of sweets such as hard candies, fruit juice or even glucose tablets. That way if you are feeling the effects of your blood sugar dropping, you can use any one of these for a fast sugar spike.

Elimination

There are certain foods and beverages that can have a negative impact on your blood sugar levels and should be avoided. Examples of these are caffeine, white flour, high amounts of sugar and alcohol. Although you do not eat them, tobacco products should be avoided as well.

Frequent Feedings

Instead of eating two or three huge meals a day, eat smaller, more frequent meals every few hours. The Mayo Clinic recommends you eat a number of small meals all through the day to keep a better handle on your blood sugar levels.

Clean Foods

Keep your sources of calories clean. Eat lean meats, fish, whole grains, poultry without skins and vegetables. When it comes to fruits, see how your body reacts to them. Dried fruits should not be eaten.

Natural

Do not be fooled into thinking that foods made with "natural" sugars are safe. Although they may be natural, they can still have an effect on your blood sugar levels and cause symptoms to appear.

Breakfast

After you come out of a nighttime fast from sleeping, it is important to start the day off with breakfast. Do not skip it.
