Aciphex, also known as raberprazole, belongs to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors. According to FamilyDoctor.org, proton pump inhibitors are used to decrease the production of stomach acid. Aciphex is used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Other proton pump inhibitors may be used instead of Aciphex.

Omeprazole

According to Drugs.com, Omeprazole, the brand name of which is Prilosec, is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach and intestines. Prilosec is used to treat and prevent ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Common side effects of Prilosec include headache, stomach pain, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Esomeprazole

Drugs.com states that esomeprazole, also known as Nexium, is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases production of acid in the stomach. Esomeprazole is indicated for frequent heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Esomeprazole is also used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Common side effects of Esomeprazole include headache, dry mouth, gas, swelling, stomach pains, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Pantoprazole

According to Drugs.com, pantoprazole, or Protonix, is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses the production of stomach acid. Pantoprazole is mainly used to treat and prevent frequent heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Pantoprazole may also be used to treat and prevent peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Common side effects of pantoprazole include headache, stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
