Whether it's insomnia, a long night of fun or burning the candle at both ends, the body may show signs of exhaustion by creating bags under the eyes. Weakening of the skin and loosening of the blood vessels is what causes bags to form, states the Mayo Clinic. Using Preparation H, a cream designed to restrict blood vessels, is a common method for treating bags under the eyes, although its effectiveness varies. Applying Preparation H to the area under the eyes allows the active ingredient, phenylephrine, to tighten the skin under the eyes, eliminating the bags. Because this method isn't a generally advisable form of treatment, it is important to be careful when applying the cream.
Step 1
Purchase Preparation H from a local pharmacy or drugstore. It can be obtained over-the-counter and does not require a prescription.
Step 2
Wash your face and hands before applying the cream. Apply a facial cleanser using soft circular motions. It is important to start with clean skin to avoid getting any dirt or bacteria in or near the eye. Wash your hands with an antibacterial soap. Rinse your face and hands with warm water. Pat your face dry with a clean, dry towel.
Step 3
Apply a pea-sized amount of Preparation H cream onto a cotton swab. Gently spread the cream onto the skin underneath your eyes. Take care not to touch the pink or white portion of the eye area. Allow the cream to dry naturally. Take care not to spread the cream into your eyes by rubbing your eyes, even once the cream dries.
Step 4
Observe your skin after applying the cream to determine if this method is effective.
