Really healthy hair is shiny, soft and manageable, whether worn short or long. With proper care, you can have the bouncy, strong locks you want. Very dry, curly, extremely long or damaged hair may require special care to be its best. Healthy hair can make any style look better, keep you looking young and fresh, and make your locks your shining glory. Healthy hair is also easier to care for, requiring less time and effort.

Step 1

Eat a well-balanced diet with enough omega-3 fatty acids. Include flaxseed oil and coldwater fish in your diet, recommends the Women's Health Care Topics website.

Step 2

Shampoo your hair less often. When you do shampoo, choose a gentle shampoo designed for your hair type and apply it only to the scalp. Consider using conditioner instead of shampoo at least some of the time to freshen your hair without removing natural oils, recommends Daily Glow.

Step 3

Condition your hair every time you wash it. Select a conditioner designed for your hair type for the best results. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently de-tangle your hair while the conditioner is still in it.

Step 4

Use a deep-conditioning hair mask at least once a week, suggests Caroline Greyl, president of the Leonor Greyl hair-care company. If your hair is quite damaged, consider using a deep conditioner instead of your daily conditioner, applying it only from the middle of the hair shaft downward.

Step 5

Handle your hair gently, particularly when it is wet. Blot your hair dry or wrap it in an absorbent towel rather than rubbing it with a towel. Air dry your hair as often as possible, and limit your use of heated styling tools and chemical treatments. Apply silicone-based shine enhancers to dry hair rather than using them on wet hair.

Step 6

Use a natural boar bristle brush to brush your dry hair, recommends Didi Gluck at Marie Claire magazine. These brushes spread natural oils through the length of your hair.
