The first step in eliminating puffy eyes is to identify what's causing them. According to the EyeDoctorGuide.com, a number of things can cause your eyes to appear puffy. These include hormonal fluctuations, fluid retention, dehydration, medication use and allergies. Identifying a reason might require some trial and error, such as eliminating a possible cause and seeing if that makes a difference.

Step 1

Drink more water and eat less salt. If you drink too little, your body will hold on to any liquid that enters your body. According to Shape magazine, this can lead to bloating and fluid retention, which can show in the form of puffy eyes. Salt also causes fluid retention and should be limited. Caffeine and alcohol dehydrate as well.

Step 2

Cool down your eyes. Cold reduces puffiness, so use it as soon as you notice your eyelids swelling or even before, if you know what causes the problem. Try washing your face with cold water or applying a cool wet washcloth on your closed eyes. Wrap a few ice cubes inside a thin towel if the puffiness is pronounced and you want to get rid of it faster. Cold cucumber slices or tea bags can also help.

Step 3

Sleep more. Eye puffiness, either on the eyelids or under the eyes can be caused by lack of sleep, according to MayoClinic.com. Sleeping seven to eight hours every night might help. Sleeping on your back can also cause fluid to pool under your eyes, leading to puffiness and swelling. The MayoClinic.com recommends sleeping with a high pillow to make sure your head is higher than your body to prevent fluid pooling.

Things You'll Need
