These can be especially challenging times to find a job, whether you are looking for a first job or want to make a career change. As of 2010, the U.S. unemployment rate is around 9 percent to 10 percent, and millions of Americans are looking for a job. Resumes and cover letters flood hiring agencies and human resource departments. To distinguish yourself and find the job of your dreams, you need to stay organized, focused and persistent.
Instructions
Step 1
Envision your ideal job. What field is it in? What type of hours do you desire to work? Having a clear idea of what you want is the first step in finding the right position for you.
Step 2
Create an online identity. You can design your own website or frequently write in a blog, or you can create profiles on Linked In and Facebook. These profiles will get your name and resume on the Internet, where employers can find you.
Step 3
Use online job banks to identify available positions. Look through a variety of sites with job postings, and bookmark all the positions that interest you.
Step 4
Create and perfect your resume and cover letters. Rewrite your current resume and cover letter for each potential job to target the specific position requirements. Identify what the hiring manager is looking for, and highlight those areas in your resume.
Step 5
Send out the targeted resumes and cover letters to the companies. Some companies provide online application forms to fill out, while others prefer e-mail. In other cases, you need to send a printed application by regular mail.
Step 6
Follow up with an e-mail or phone call two to three days after you submit your cover letter and resume. Keep the communication short. Simply say that you are contacting the job poster to ensure that he has received your application and to answer any questions that he might have.
Step 7
If you get an interview, prepare thoroughly for the interview by researching the company. Bring with you a list of references or a portfolio. Also dress appropriately for the interview, and brush up on interview etiquette prior to meeting.
Step 8
Follow up with a thank you e-mail or written note immediately after the meeting. Keep it short, but bring up a subject you discussed in the interview. Reiterate that you are very interested in the job.
Step 9
Accept or decline the job offer if it is presented to you. If the company does not offer the job, respectfully ask that they keep you in mind for future positions with the company.
