Eyebright is not just an ornamental shrub. Yes, it's a beautiful plant on the outside, but inside it is believed to contain medicinal elements that are used by herbalists from around the world. There has been little scientific research done showing its effectiveness; none-the-less herbalists recommend its use. As with all herbs, consult your physician before using. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Healthy Eyes
Euphrasia oficinalis, the official name of eyebright, is commonly recommended for diseases of the eye. Herbalist Michael Tierra suggests making a rinse, compress or eye bath from the flowers and leaves of the plant. It contains tannins and volatile oils which are believed to clear excess discharge and help heal sores and infections. In 2000 there was a limited trial done in Germany and Switzerland that showed an 81 percent improvement in patients suffering from inflammatory or catarrhal conjunctivitis after two weeks of using eye drops from the eurphrasia plant.
Sinus Relief
The flavenoids found in eyebright can help relieve sinus pressure and excess mucus according to herbalist Randy Mabey. He specifically recommends using a tincture when there is an abundance of watery nasal discharge. Its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce swelling in nasal membranes allowing the passages to open up and make your breathing easier. There are no known scientific trials done on using eyebright to treat sinus disorders. Euphrasia is also used to treat upper respiratory disorders in homeopathic medicine.
Sore Throat
Less common is eyebright's use in sore mouths and throats. Herbalists Mabey and Tierra both suggest its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties can lessen throat and mouth pain when used as a mouthwash or tea. Because there is little scientific research to support this claim and side effects have not been determined, it is best to consult your physician before trying eyebright internally. If irritation or allergic reaction occur, discontinue use immediately.
