Effexor XR, or venlafaxine extended-release, is an antidepressant drug used primarily in the treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorders with or without agoraphobia, or the fear of enclosed or crowded spaces. Pfizer, the drug manufacturer, suggest that while this drug is considered safe for the general population, side effects are common. However, there is a small population that will exhibit extreme difficulty taking this drug and may need to find a more suitable medication with fewer complications.

Suicidal Ideation

Antidepressants, including Effexor XR, can increase suicidal ideation. Physicians' Desktop Reference suggests that caregivers and loved ones watch for dramatic changes in actions, disposition, mood and overall personality for signs of disturbing behavior or hopelessness. This can include attitude shifts, increased anxiety, hostility, sleep disturbances, restlessness, risk-taking behaviors, impulsiveness or other indications that create alarm. If symptoms of this nature persist or raise doubts, it is imperative to contact the prescribing physician immediately.

Contraindications

Effexor XR is not without contraindications. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs, can pose a considerable threat to those taking Effexor XR. RxList suggests a minimum of 14 days between the discontinuance of an MAOI and the beginning treatment of Effexor XR. By the same token, a minimum of seven days should occur between the discontinuance of Effexor XR prior to beginning an MAOI. People using heart and cholesterol medication should use caution with Effexor XR. According to Drug Information Online, Effexor XR can increase heart rate and LDL cholesterol levels that could jeopardize an existing condition or treatment plan.

Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction can become problematic for men taking Effexor XR. According to Pfizer, delayed ejaculation is the most commonly reported issue, with another 3 percent of respondents reporting loss of desire to engage in sexual activity. RxList reports that women exhibit orgasmic dysfunctions on Effexor XR also, while impotence is an additional concern for men. Sexual dysfunction problems may further impair self-esteem, relationships and quality of life for the individual taking this drug, making the risks of taking it in some situations larger than the potential benefits.
