Nothing can ruin a game of golf like a surprise rain storm. If you've finally scored a prime tee time at your favorite course, a rainy day doesn't necessarily mean it's time to reschedule. A quality rain suit keeps you dry in even the worst storms, and most also offer protection from wind and cold temperatures. Choose your suit carefully to balance style, comfort and performance so you can keep playing no matter what the weather.
Step 1
Visit specialty sporting goods stores or golf shops and try on a variety of rain suits to find the right fit. Try a few faux golf swings while wearing each suit to text flexibility and range of motion. Raise your arms overhead and make sure the suit doesn't ride up.
Step 2
Put your shoes on to check the length of the pants. Buy pants that are long enough to protect your legs and ankles from the rain but won't drag the ground and collect mud out on the golf course. Extend your arms and check that the sleeves fall right at your wrists, instead of covering your hands and getting in the way of your game.
Step 3
Inspect the inside of each suit to find the most comfortable material. Choose a material that feels good against your skin and wicks away sweat and moisture so you stay dry. Unzip removable liners to check the material below and confirm that it's comfortable and breathable.
Step 4
Wear the suit around the store for a few minutes and listen for noise. Walk normally and swing your arms, then bend down and stand back up. Select a suit that stays quiet instead of one that swooshes as you move.
Step 5
Read the tags on each rain suit to find breathable, waterproof pants and jackets. Look for engineered materials like Gore-tex, which protects you from the rain while still venting sweat and moisture. Avoid polyester and similar materials, which trap moisture inside and can leave you cold and wet.
Tips and Warnings
- Look for suits with a high collar and tightly fitting cuffs to keep rain out. Some golfers prefer suits with removable sleeves that protect you from rain while helping you stay cool. Choose easy-to-remove pants with full-zip legs to maximize convenience.
