Transporting a kayak can be done in several ways. According to Basic Kayaking 101, foam blocks are an inexpensive tool to use when you want to move your kayak on the roof of a truck. Foam blocks hug against the vessel surface and adapt to its shape. The snug connection helps keep the kayak secure to the roof of the vehicle. While a foam block system is not the only way to carry a kayak, it is a quick way to get the boat secure, so you can travel.
Step 1
Place foam blocks on the roof of the truck. Some blocks have molded surfaces to hold the kayak. Follow the instruction provided with your kit for proper placement. Blocks run perpendicular to the length of the truck.
Step 2
A line the straps provided with the blocks through the groves in the foam. Pull the free ends of the straps into the truck interior through the windows from each side. Connect the straps together in the interior of the truck. Secure loose ends so they do not dangle. Tighten the straps to hold the block firmly against the surface of the vehicle.
Step 3
Set the kayak on top of the blocks. If securing just one kayak, place it so the bottom of the boat rests on the blocks. Multiple kayaks may lie on their sides.
Step 4
Wrap the tie straps around the middle of the kayak. Use at least two straps. The tie straps wrap over the top of the boat and feed into the interior of the truck through the windows. Secure the straps inside the truck under the roof and do not let them dangle. Tie the straps tight enough to hold the boat firm but not damage the surface.
Tips and Warnings
- A roof rack will provide a better hold if transporting a kayak long distances. Foam blocks work well for those boating close by and not driving on the interstate.
