Phase 1 Diet foods are part of the South Beach Diet plan. The diet is designed in different phases. Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet lasts for two weeks and will work to stabilize your blood sugar and work through food cravings, such as sugar. It can be the hardest phase of the diet, but it will also help you break some food addictions and become healthier.

Meats

Meats that are allowed in Phase 1 are lean cuts of beef, non-fat lamb, skinless poultry, pork, fish, seafood, veal, tofu, soy-based meat substitutes and lunch meat.

Dairy

Low fat milk, fat-free milk, soy milk, plain yogurt, sugar-free yogurt, fat-free half & half, fat-free cheese or low-fat cheese.

Nuts and Seeds

There is one serving of nuts or seeds allowed. These can be flax seed, walnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia or peanuts. Peanut butter can be eaten, but only 1 tablespoon unless it is natural; then it can be 2 tablespoons.

Fats and Oils

Oils that are allowed on the Phase 1 section of the South Beach diet plan are olive oil, canola oil, corn, enova, grape seed, soybean and safflower oil. Fats that are allowed are salad dressing, olives, mayonnaise, margarine, avocado and guacamole.

Sugar Alcohols and Sugar Substitutes

Sugar substitutes that are allowed are sucralose, saccharin, stevia, Nutrasweet, fructose and acesulfame k. Sugar alcohol products that are able to be consumed are xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, lactitol and isomalt.

Sauces/Toppings

While South Beach diet suggests only sparing use of sauces or toppings during phase 1, the ones that are allowed are hot sauce, salsa, steak sauce, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and light whipped topping.

Spice/Seasoning

Some seasonings are allowed in phase 1. These seasonings are non-sugared spices, broth, extracts, lemon juice, lime juice pepper and horseradish sauce.

Desserts

While one can only have 75 calories of dessert a day, they can be off the allowed list of hard sugar-free candy, no-sugar-added chocolate powder, sugar-free frozen chocolate treats, sugar-free gelatin, sugar-free gum, baking cocoa powder, sugar-free frozen ice and sugar substitute.

Vegetables

Any of these vegetables must be fresh, frozen or no-sugar-added canned varieties. Vegetables allowed are green beans, Italian beans, wax beans, black beans, butter beans, chickpeas, garbanzo beans, pigeon peas, asparagus, artichokes, soy beans, split peas, broccoli and bok choy. Other vegetables allowed are cabbage, celery, snow peas, spinach, alfalfa sprouts, spaghetti squash, summer squash, yellow zucchini, cauliflower, collard greens, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, 6 ounces of juice, tomato, mushrooms and mustard greens. Okra, onion, peppers, pickles, radishes, rhubarb and sauerkraut are the last vegetables allowed.
