Near-sightedness, also known as myopia, refers to the inability to see objects at a distance clearly. Near-sightedness is treated by using corrective lenses as prescribed by your optometrist, or by laser surgery. Some people prefer to treat their myopia with eye exercises. Opinions vary as to whether exercises can restore your vision, but eye exercises are free and can be performed at home. Check with your optometrist before you try to correct near-sightedness with eye exercises.

Sunning Application

Sunning is an exercise from the Bates Method of eye care. You will need a desk lamp that can be turned to different angles. The sun is the ideal light, if it is not too strong for your eyes. To perform the sunning application, you must close your eyes and direct the light source at your face. For a lamp, 60 to 100 watt bulbs should work. If you experience any pain or the light seems too bright, move the light farther away. When the light is comfortable, keep your eyes closed and imagine an object in the distance, straight where your nose is pointing. Once you see it clearly, turn your head slowly from side to side, while keeping the imaginary object straight in front of your eyes as you turn. Perform for three minutes. Then you must follow with the Eye Palming exercise.

Eye Palming

Palming is an exercise that can be done easily at home. Sit down comfortably, so your body is relaxed, and rub your hands together to warm them up a little. Close your eyes and cup your hands over your eye sockets. There should be no pressure at all on your eyeballs, and your nose should be free to breathe, according to EyeExercisesforGoodVision.com. Breathe deeply and ensure there are no gaps between your fingers for light to seep through. Focus on the darkness, and visualize a distant object or scene. Continue the exercise for three minutes.

Sway Method

The Sway method is an eye exercise that should be performed after palming. Swaying consists of standing in front of a window that offers a nice view, and looking at something in the distance, even if it is blurry. Breathe deeply and listen to your surroundings, as you slowly sway from side to side. Shift your weight from foot to foot and raise your heels off the floor slightly. After a few minutes, open your eyes and look at the distant object once again. Continue to look at the spot and sway from side to side.

Focal Flexibility Development

The focal flexibility exercise will help you shift your vision focus from far to near and near to far. Remove your glasses for this exercise if you wear glasses. Start by holding a pencil or your finger about six inches away from the tip of your nose. Try to focus on the finger tip for five seconds, says EyeExercisesforGoodVision.com. Break your focus, and try to focus on something like a tree that is at least 20 feet away for five seconds. Alternate between looking at the far object and the near object for five seconds at a time. Repeat it 40 times.
