Home Remedy for Heartburn Relief

Heartburn is the sensation caused by acid reflux, which is when the digestive fluids in the stomach back up into the esophagus. The stomach is protected from the fluids, which are corrosive, but the esophagus, the pipe leading from the stomach to the mouth, has no protection. When acid reflux occurs a burning sensation is felt in the esophagus. Heartburn is caused by eating a large amount of fatty foods, chocolate, smoking and other factors. A variety of simple home remedies can be implemented for heartburn relief.

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum can increase saliva in the mouth, throat and esophagus. The saliva will temporarily coat the digestive tract, soothing the burning sensation caused by stomach acid. The saliva will also clear and neutralize any stomach acid present.

Small Meals

Avoid additional pressure on the esophageal sphincter by consuming foods in small amounts. Keep belts and pants loose around meal time to decrease strain on the stomach. Foods that aid in decreasing acidity include brown rice, potatoes and pineapple. Avoid adding salt to foods.

Ginger Root

Take two capsules of ginger root prior to eating. Increase the dosage daily until the taste of ginger can be tasted in the back of the mouth. Ginger will naturally absorb stomach secretions, decreasing the chance of heartburn. Do not take raw ginger, as it may be too strong to tolerate.

Vinegar Mixture

Mix 1 tsp. natural apple cider vinegar with 1/2 glass of water and add honey for sweetness. Mix well. Sip occasionally throughout meals.

Water

Increase water intake to aid in the stomach's creation of a mucous barrier. A barrier cannot be created in the stomach if the body is dehydrated. Drink one to two glasses of water prior to meals.
