Walking is a low-impact way to exercise as well as the most basic mode of human transportation. As you build up your stamina and explore new areas, you may wonder how far you have actually traveled along your route. There are a few ways to calculate the distance you've walked. If you walk along a road for the entirety of the route, the fastest way to calculate distance is with the odometer of your car. If you don't walk along roads for any part of your route, you can calculate distance using a pedometer.

How to Calculate a Walking Route By Using Your Car's Odometer

Step 1

Drive your car to the start of your walking route and mark down the odometer reading.

Step 2

Follow the exact walking route you wish to calculate.

Step 3

Mark down the odometer reading at the end of the route.

Step 4

Subtract the first reading from the second reading. The difference is the total distance of your walking route.

How to Calculate a Walking Route With a Pedometer

Step 1

Clip the pedometer to your belt just above your hip.

Step 2

Reset the pedometer to zero at the start of your route.

Step 3

Walk along the route for which you wish to determine length.

Step 4

Check the pedometer step count at the end of the route. For most people, 2,000 steps is equivalent to 1 mile. One step is equivalent to 2.5 feet.

Step 5

Multiply the step count by 2.5 to get the exact distance of your walking route in feet. Example: 1,000 steps multiplied by 2.5 is 2,500 feet.

Things You'll Need
