The Freestyle glucose monitor is a device designed to help diabetics test and keep track of their blood sugar levels. If a person's blood sugar is outside a certain range, the device will provide a warning. The monitor consists of two components, the control unit that calculates and displays the results of the test, and the disposable test strips that hold the blood sample for a reading. Proper use of the Freestyle glucose monitor will help to ensure an accurate reading.
Step 1
Slide the top of a test strip into the slot located at the bottom of the meter. Push the strip in until the device activates. Wait for the meter's display to show the icons of a blood drop and a test strip.
Step 2
Remove the cap from the end of the control solution. Apply the spout of the control solution bottle to one of the semicircular test sample areas located on the end of the strip. Squeeze solution onto the test sample area until the meter beeps.
Step 3
Wait for the meter to process the control solution. Hold down the "c" button for two seconds when the results appear on the display. Confirm that the meter is in working order by comparing the results with the rating printed on the test strip container.
Step 4
Remove the used test strip and insert a fresh one. Wait for the two icons to appear on the meter's display before proceeding.
Step 5
Use the lancing device to prick one of your fingertips. Position the meter next to your fingertip such that one of the sample areas on the strip comes into contact with a drop of blood. Wait for the device to beep before you move it away.
Step 6
Wait for the meter to process the blood sample. Note the test result displayed on the screen. If your test result indicates a glucose level lower than 20 mg/dL, the display will print "LO," indicating that you have low blood glucose. If your glucose level is higher than 500 mg/dL, the display will print "HI," indicating that you have high blood glucose.
Step 7
Evaluate your symptoms; if the results indicate a low or high blood glucose level and you experience the accompanying symptoms, perform the treatment procedure provided by your doctor. If you have no symptoms, test your blood again with a new strip to confirm the result.
