The person needs to finish the full course of the treatment as prescribed.

Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin treats ulcerative colitis caused by a bacterial infection the same way all antibiotics work: by interfering with bacterial reproduction and growth. Drugs.com states the person suffering from ulcerative colitis should not take ciprofloxacin with milk products. If the person has health ailments, such as diabetes or liver and kidney problems, he should report them to the doctor before taking this medication. The full course of antibiotic therapy needs to occur to have full therapeutic affect on the infection. This medication should be consumed at the same time each day.

Metronidazole

When a doctor prescribes metronidazole, the person should take it without food, Drugs.com reports. Like many antibiotics, the person needs to take metronidazole at the same time each day without skipping a dose or stopping short of the full course of treatment.

Norfloxacin

Another antibiotic for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, norfloxacin, also need to be ingested without food. It also requires a full glass of water for full effect, as well as complete ingestion of the course of treatment, Drugs.com reports.

Cefaclor

Physicians also may prescribe cefaclor as an antibiotic treatment for ulcerative colitis. Like most antibiotics, cefaclor can cause some mild and temporary non-serious side effects during the initial phase of consumption. These may include headaches, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness and a sinus infection.
