Whiteheads are types of acne that form on the top of the skin---commonly on the face, back and chest area. The acne has a visible pustule of white or yellow pus. They form when pores become clogged with dirt, debris and dead skin and are common in all age groups but predominately are seen during the teenage years.

Development

Pores and oil glands become filled with dirt and oil causing an inflammation in the skin. The area becomes slightly infected and bacteria begins to form, causing increased redness, soreness and a raised bump to develop. The plugged pore or hair follicle bursts onto the skin's surface appearing as a small bump filled with fluid.

Causes

Whiteheads and other acne are caused by increased hormones during puberty and teenage years. Acne is also common during a woman's menstrual cycle. Increased bacteria, taking certain medications (like antidepressants) as well as environmental conditions can cause acne.

Symptoms

Acne commonly appears on areas of the body where there are more oil glands. Symptoms include redness, swelling and other types of acne. Blackheads, dark filled pores, nodules and cysts may also be present if whiteheads appear on the skin.

Treatment

Over-the-counter medications containing benzoyl peroxide kill bacteria that are present on the skin. Many creams, ointments and facial washes contain the medication in various amounts. Implement a skin cleansing and toning treatment daily. Do not over cleanse or scrub your face, as skin will increase oil production.

Things to Avoid

Do not pick or squeeze whiteheads. Scarring and spreading of bacteria can occur. Use makeup and other skin care products that are oil-free or water based. Avoid touching your face too much.
