How to Get Rid of Your Under-Eye Circles

Under-eye circles can make you look older and more tired than you really are. Dark circles happen when you expose your skin to the sun, smoke and drink excessively, have been crying or have allergies. But under-eye circles are often also hereditary. Under-eye circles look a lot like bruises because the capillaries in your skin break and become irritated, causing blood to leak into your skin. This causes your hemoglobin to break down, which makes the area under your eyes turn a dark bluish color. You can, however, get rid of under-eye circles by eating the right foods, drinking water and getting plenty of sleep.

Step 1

Put an ice pack on your eyes. The cold temperature from your ice pack will reduce the swelling and dark color under your eyes. This treatment is ideal if you want to see immediate results, but they will fade in a matter of hours. Take an ice pack from the fridge, lie down on your couch and place over your eyes for about 15 minutes.

Step 2

Hydrate your body. If you don't get enough water, your body tries to retain as much as it can because it isn't sure when you will hydrate it again. Dehydration contributes to under-eye circles. The Mayo Clinic says you should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day to keep your body hydrated.

Step 3

Get your rest. If you are sleep deprived, you rob your body the chance to recover from all the abuse you put it through every day. This causes the circles under your eyes to look much worse. The Mayo Clinic says for your body to be well rested, you must get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

Step 4

Fill your diet with fruits and veggies. Fruits and veggies are full of vitamin C, which boosts the amount of skin cells your body can produce. The new skin cells will replace your old, damaged skin cells, helping to get rid of your under-eye circles. At every meal, have a serving of fruits or veggies, such as bananas, oranges, spinach or broccoli.

Step 5

Put tea bags on your eyes. Tea bags contain the chemical epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. EGCG is an anti-inflammatory agent that can calm and relieve the dark color beneath your eyes. Brew a pot of water, and place the tea bags inside for five minutes. Remove from the water, drain and cool. Place one tea bag over each eye while you are in a vertical position. Leave on for at least five minutes.
