Your child most likely enjoys cooking with you in the kitchen. If he is too young to use cooking appliances, teach him how to make snacks that require no cooking. When he makes his own food, you are teaching him about food planning and preparation. Demonstrate the proper techniques the first time he makes his own snacks. Once you are comfortable with his skills and abilities, let him express his creativity in the kitchen.

Ants Sitting On A Log

Even young children can make ants sitting on a log. This easy snack is visually appealing and tasty to eat. Have prewashed and sliced celery sticks ready for your child. Tell her to spread either peanut butter or cream cheese into the well of the celery. Top the cream cheese or peanut butter with raisins carefully arranged in a line. Teach your child how to clean up her work area when she is done.

Herbed Ricotta Topping

Combining protein rich ricotta cheese with whole grain crackers or a whole wheat bagel makes this snack filling and healthy. Tell your child to combine 1 cup of ricotta cheese with 1 to 2o tbsp. of fresh or dried basil. Spread the cheese mixture on crackers or bagels.

Peanut Butter Banana Apples

Apples are full of fiber and low in calories. The crisp sweetness of the apple combines nicely with the smooth texture of peanut butter and the sweetness of the bananas. Ask your child to slice the apple and banana into several thin slices and discard any seeds. Instruct him to spread peanut butter on the apple and top the apples with sliced bananas. Eat plain, or sprinkle with cinnamon and a dash of sugar. Top the apple slices with blueberries if desired.

Deli Meat Roll-Ups

A filling snack that could also be part of a healthy lunch is a deli meat roll-up. Give your child an opened cheese stick and several slices of deli meat. Ask her to lay the deli meat on a plate. Tell her to put the cheese stick on the edge of the lunch meat and roll the meat and cheese together.

Bananas on a Stick

Kids of all ages will enjoy making and eating bananas on a stick. Give your child a banana, 1 or 2o tbsp. of peanut butter, a popsicle stick and some chopped nuts. To make the snack, ask him to slide the popsicle stick into the end of the banana and then spread peanut butter on the banana. Tell him to roll the peanut butter coated banana in the nuts. He can eat it right away or freeze it until the banana firms up.
