Preventing the spread of communicable disease helps control virus outbreaks and epidemics. Although germs spread many different ways, the key steps in controlling the germs are universal. Some germs spread through droplets in the air, while others transfer with direct contact between individuals or through bodily fluids. Other diseases live on inanimate objects for long periods. Because individuals are contagious before showing symptoms, stopping the spread of viruses and bacteria begins with healthy habits.
Step 1
Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water. Proper hand washing requires making lather with the soap and vigorously rubbing hands together. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to disinfect hands. Always wash hands after using the restroom or before eating.
Step 2
Cover your mouth and nose with your inner elbow while coughing or sneezing. Wash your hands after sneezing or coughing.
Step 3
Keep your immunizations current.
Step 4
Stay home from school and work when you are sick or when family members are sick.
Step 5
Avoid close contact with individuals who are ill. Also avoid contact when you are ill.
Step 6
Practice safe sex by using condoms.
Step 7
Wear disposable gloves when handling bodily fluids of others, such as feces or blood.
