Dealing With Topamax Side Effects

Topamax is an anticonvulsant, which means that it is a powerful medication that has effects on the brain and central nervous system. Topamax is commonly used to treat migraine headaches and seizures. There are a variety of side effects that are associated with Topamax use, including tiredness, drowsiness, confusion, kidney stone formation, weight loss and loss of appetite.

Step 1

Take the medication exactly as directed. Missing a dose can cause certain withdrawal effects, such as a severe headache or a seizure. On the other hand, if you miss a dose by accident, do not attempt to compensate by taking multiple doses simultaneously, because this will only increase the risk of side effects.

Step 2

Take Topamax before bed. Not only will this help you take the medication regularly, but it will minimize the impact of some side effects such as drowsiness and diminished alertness.

Step 3

Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including herbal supplements. These can heighten Topamax's side effects.

Step 4

Monitor your weight and diet. Topamax can cause weight loss. If your weight begins to decrease, you may want to augment your diet with meal replacement supplements and beverages. If weight loss becomes a problem, maintain a regular eating schedule so that your weight does not slip as a result of decreased appetite.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water. Not only will this help prevent some of the metabolic side effects of using Topamax, but it will also protect against kidney stone formation, which is another potential hazard of using Topamax.
