Mineral makeup has been used for centuries, but lately mineral makeup has made a huge comeback in the makeup industry. Mineral based makeup is made from finely ground minerals from the earth and is not synthetic like other traditional makeup bases. Mineral makeup can be beneficial for the skin. People using mineral makeup have less breakouts, more skin protection, and a healthier body because there is no chemical residues being absorbed by the skin.
Fewer Breakouts
Mineral makeup may help those with acneic skin conditions who are currently using conventional makeup. Conventional makeup on the market today is made up of different binders, preservatives, dyes, fragrances and other irritants that could contribute to acne breakouts. Mineral makeup is considered "purer" than conventional makeup because it does not contain these possible skin irritants. Mineral makeup consists of ultra fine mineral particles, that are small enough to not clog pores, a leading cause of acne. Mineral makeup also contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which can help dry up current breakouts.
Skin Protection
Because mineral makeup naturally contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, it can protect the skin from sun damage and freckling. The natural SPF found in mineral makeup provides the skin with a protective barrier to the environment, and UVA/UVB rays from the sun. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, mineral makeup can be used for incidental exposure to the sun, if the SPF of the makeup is 15 or higher. If planning to spend long periods of time in the sun, applying a sunscreen before applying mineral makeup is advised.
Healthier Body
Mineral makeup does not contain the many chemicals, preservatives, fillers, colorings or dyes that conventional makeup does. Some chemicals found in conventional makeup such as parabens, propylene glycol, and synthetic dyes are known to be possible carcinogens to the body. According to The Breast Cancer Fund, parabens are shown to mimic estrogen in the body, which can increase the expression of genes that cause tumor cells. Material safety data regarding propylene glycol and synthetic dyes have shown allergic skin reactions and dermatitis, as well as other health problems. Over time, the use of conventional makeup may be harmful to health. Choosing mineral makeup instead of conventional makeup may help diminish potential toxins from being absorbed by the skin, resulting in a healthier body.
