Foods That Contain Low or No Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients. The other two being fats and protein. Carbohydrates are used by the body for instant energy or they are stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles for energy later. If you are trying lower your intake, there are several foods that are low in carbs or void of carbs altogether.

Eggs

Eggs are a good source of protein, amino acids and a nutrient called choline. No matter which way they are prepared, they either have no carbs at all or very little. This also goes for egg whites and egg substitutes.

Fish

Fish is another food that has a high amount of protein and is low in carbs. Cold water fish like salmon, mackerel and herring also have omega-3 fatty acids. Shellfish is also low in carbs and some examples include clams, shrimp and lobster.

Alcohol

When consumed in high amounts, alcohol can have a negative effect on the liver, the mind and the heart. But when you drink in moderation, it can offer you benefits. When it comes to the nutritional value of alcohol, there are types that are low in carbohydrates or have none at all. Examples of these include gin, whiskey, brandy and vodka. Other beverages that are low in carbs or carb-free include water, diet soft drinks, club soda and brewed and instant tea.

Meat

Beef is another source of protein. It also has B-vitamins, iron and minerals like selenium and zinc. One thing it does not have is carbohydrates. Other types of meat that are low in carbs or free of carbs include chicken, turkey, game meats and pork. Processed meats, like sausage, bacon, pepperoni, salami and hot dogs are also low in carbohydrates.

Cheese

Cheese is a dairy product that is high in calcium and protein, and low in carbohydrates. Specific examples of cheese are Monterey Jack, muenster, fontina, cheddar and Gruyere.

Vegetables

On average, vegetables have moderate amounts of carbohydrates. But there are some that are low in carbs. Examples of these include celery, baby spinach, radishes, lettuce, mushrooms and bok choy.
