Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of the nose, ear, urinary tract and skin. Similar to other penicillinase antibiotics, amoxicillin exhibits bactericidal properties by inhibiting the formation of the bacterial cell wall. Amoxicillin is typically prescribed for infants in a liquid form or as a chewable tablet. There are many side effects commonly associated with amoxicillin use in infants.
Gastrointestinal Symptoms
According to Drugs.com, side effects commonly associated with amoxicillin are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Diarhea may cause infants and children to excrete loose or watery stools. At times, the diarrhea may be caused by a Clostridium difficile, a bacterial organism resistant to amoxicillin. While most of these gastrointestinal symptoms are mild and easily treated with fluids and rest, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Ohio recommends discontinuing use of amoxicillin and speaking with your infant's pediatrician if symptoms persist.
Infections
Prolonged use of antibiotics including amoxicillin can result in decreased immunity and bacterial resistance to antibiotic treatment in infants and children. Prolonged use of amoxicillin has been linked to oral thrush and new vaginal yeast infections, notes RxList. Oral thrush is commonly associated with decreased immunity and is characterized by slightly raised white patches on the tongue or inner cheeks. Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection include vaginal discharge or vaginal soreness.
Other Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, amoxicillin can cause agitation, confusion, changes in mood, unusual weakness and dizziness. Other side effects associated with amoxicillin include a fever, headaches, a sore throat, body aches, chills and flu-like symptoms. Convulsions, seizures, anemia, jaundice and liver problems are serious side effects associated with amoxicillin.
