Tight muscles can be caused by many different factors, including injury and stress. When muscles are tight, it makes your daily life difficult and painful. While there are several pharmaceutical muscle relaxants, like Valium or Soma, you can also look to natural home remedies to treat this problem. There are many different herbs that can help with muscle relaxation that can be put in food or placed directly on the affected area.

Lavender

Lavender has been used for centuries as an important, essential oil to assist in relaxing muscles. It has properties which can help calm the body and reduce stress, thereby reducing muscular tension. Try rubbing lavender oil directly on the temples and then completely relaxing for a few minutes; the sense of peace that is felt will help to alleviate the pain. You can also add lavender oil to a warm bath. The warm water will heat the muscles, increasing blood flow; the lavender will help ease the tension, helping the warm water do its work.

Nutrition

Nutrition plays a huge part in the body's ability to stave off muscular pain. Once the muscle begins to contract, the body will spend time and resources attempting to heal it. By adding vitamins and minerals to one's diet, you can help the body replenish the nutrients it is using to heal itself. Make sure you are getting at least 1,000 mg of calcium and magnesium per day. Other vitamins you should include to help with the muscular pain and stiffness are vitamin C (which works as an anti-oxidant and helps keep toxins out of the body) and potassium, which is important for muscle development. Drink plenty of water to make sure the body is functioning properly and is flushing out additional toxins.

Herbal Remedies

There are a litany of herbs which can help with muscle relaxation and pain relief. Valerian is an herb which works as an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant, and can also help you to relax and sleep. The benefits of chamomile have been long known as a relaxant. For pain relief, try kava root, white willow or horsetail. One solution which might not be as common as others is the use of cayenne pepper; when used as a poultice, the pepper will work to reduce topical pain.
