Skateboarding is a complex sport that combines balance and agility in performing moves. The sport offers a variety of tricks, but these are challenging and each provides a distinct learning curve. Some tips can streamline the learning process. You exercise muscles and develop skills that other sports do not use. A skateboard is a simple vehicle that easily travels with you anywhere, and nearly any flat surface can support the sport.

Stances

Step 1

Walk up to a staircase. Then take the first step while paying close attention to which foot you used during the step. This foot will usually provide the most natural stance if it leads the skateboard in the front. If you are using a skateboard stance that is unnatural to you, it can interfere with the learning curve. Switch your stance, so the proper foot is in front to see if this makes you a better skateboarder.

Step 2

Angle your front foot more toward the front of the board for many tricks. The kickflip is one of the most common beginning skateboard tricks. According to well-known skateboarder Rodrigo Peterson, the front foot is better prepared to flip the board if it is already positioned to easily slide off its edge. This stance may make you a more effective skateboarder.

Step 3

Run in your socks and slide on a slippery floor. This is an alternate test for determining your natural skateboarding stance. Whichever foot was in front is the best foot to lead the skateboard.

Landings

Step 1

Wear a helmet. While getting airborne on a skateboard is itself a major challenge, so, too, is landing. Many riders jump into the air only to land off the board, or fall. According to Heyday Skateboarding, landing problems are often psychological, due to fear. If you protect your body, you have less reason to fear a fall, and it may save your life.

Step 2

Touch the board throughout the jump. If you lose contact with the skateboard in midair, this can contribute to your fear of landing. Keep your feet on the board by bending your knees and allowing the board to rise up under you while your feet remain in contact.

Step 3

Balance your body in midair. If you lean to one side during a skateboard jump, this increases the chances of a fall during a landing. Make sure the skateboard remains directly under you throughout the jump. If you could draw a straight vertical line between the skateboard and your head while in midair, you will likely land fine.
