A sleeping eye patch, or a sleeping mask, may help offer a good night's sleep. In addition, the patch may also help protect the eyes after eye surgery, according to the University of California Davis Eye Center, as it may discourage eye rubbing during sleep. In order to get the most out of a sleeping eye mask, it must be used properly.

Step 1

Sit on the edge of the bed, with the sleeping mask within easy reach. Putting on the mask while in bed will eliminate the chance for injury.

Step 2

Hold the mask in one hand and use the other hand to stretch the elastic or cloth ties away from the mask.

Step 3

Close both eyes and place the mask so it covers the front of the eyes.

Step 4

Slide the elastic or cloth ties over the head, and adjust the strap. The mask should center across the face and not feel tight.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase a sleeping eye patch that will feel comfortable against the skin, as well as block out light.
