Shingles--medically known as herpes zoster--is experienced by 10 to 20 percent of people at some point in their lives. It occurs when the varicella virus--the same virus that causes chicken pox--reactivates. The main symptom is a painful, itching, or burning vesicular rash that may appear in clumps along the chest, back, abdomen, or arm. In a person with a healthy immune system, the rash subsides without complications, although the pain may continue for a period of time, known as post-herpetic neuralgia. Immunocompromised individuals, however, can experience dangerous sequelae. Holistic remedies aim to diminish pain and enhance the body's inherent immunity. Before attempting natural treatment, consult with a health care professional for proper diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan.

Topical Applications

Certain botanicals may be applied topically to relieve itching and help the skin heal. Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth suggests a spray made of gum weed, blood root, glycerin, and menthol crystals. This formula is anti-inflammatory and relieves swelling, itching, and pain. Other herbs that may be applied as compresses include licorice, aloe leaf, plantain leaf, and calendula succus. These herbs are known for their skin healing properties. St. John's wort and lemon balm are antiviral. Also, a simple cool, wet compress over the blisters may feel soothing and help relieve pain.

Botanical Antivirals & Immune System Support

Herbal remedies may be taken internally, alone or in combination, to support the immune system in fighting the virus and healing the skin. Consult with an herbalist, naturopathic physician, or botanically trained medical doctor to find an individually appropriate combination, form, and dosage. According to Dr. Tilgner, St. John's wort has antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. It is frequently used for nerve pain, which is applicable to shingles because of its nerve involvement. Herbs that are thought to support immune function include garlic, echinacea, hyssop, lomatium, paracress, olive leaf, and cedar leaf. Supplemental vitamin C and lysine are also options.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies may be helpful in relieving the acute pain of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgias. Homeopathy is a complex medical art that is focused less on the diagnosed condition and more on the individual experiencing it. Therefore, there is no single correct remedy for shingles. But with analysis, a skilled homeopath can select an appropriate remedy based on a patient's unique symptoms, mental status, and general tendencies. Homeopathic remedies commonly prescribed for herpes zoster, as described by Dr. Roger Morrison, a medical doctor, homeopath and author of Desktop Companion to Physical Pathology, include Aresenicum, Dolichos, Iris, Lachesis, Mezereum, Ranunculus, Sulphur, and Variolinum.

Rest & Stress Management

Shingles is similar to any infection in that to heal the body requires rest. The immune system functions best when a person gets sufficient sleep, eats a healthy diet, and manages stress. Factors that create stress should be diminished as much as possible. Techniques that help in stress management vary by individual and may include yoga, tai chi, qigong, meditation, gentle exercise, or reading.
