The Slim Fast company produces and sells its own brand of various meal replacement items to help people lose weight. The basic concept of the diet is to shed extra pounds by consuming the company's products, which include shakes and snack items, in place of meals a few times per day.
History
The Slim Fast diet was launched in 1977 by salesman S. Daniel Abraham. Slim Fast started as a small business but hit a high in popularity when TV personality Oprah Winfrey lost more than 50 pounds on the diet in the 1980s. The products, which are sold worldwide, continue to be a popular weight loss choice for many people.
Diet
The basic rules of the Slim Fast diet are to replace breakfast and lunch with two Slim Fast shakes or bars followed by a healthy dinner consisting of no more than 500 calories. In addition to the three daily meals, you are also advised to consume at least three snacks daily. Slim Fast recommends that the snacks consist of fruits, vegetables, nuts or Slim Fast brand snack bars.
Potential Results
Slim Fast claims that most people should expect to lose one pound to two pounds per week if they follow the plan. Additionally, Slim Fast suggests drinking eight glasses of water per day and exercising for at least 30 minutes most days of the week to achieve the maximum results.
Efficacy
A study presented in 2003 at the North American Association for the Study of Obesity in Florida found that people who stayed on the Slim Fast plan for 10 years were on average 33 pounds lighter than a matched group of people from the same area who didn't participate in the study.
